Project for a Pilot Unit for the Disposal of Sewage Sludge

The aim of the project is to develop, through industrial research and experimental development activities, a pilot unit for environmentally friendly and economically advantageous disposal of sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plants. The device, manufactured based on the developed prototype, will be capable of processing sewage sludge—waste—directly at its point of origin, with the anticipated capacity tailored to specific customer requirements. The intention is to introduce the device to the markets of the European Union and the Russian Federation.

The project will help, within the ITI Ostrava initiative, to establish cooperation between two experienced entities with valuable know-how—a research organization and a business entity—ensuring effective utilization and transfer of research and development results into practice. The project also builds on and develops existing solutions from the DMS project within ITI Ostrava.

The ultimate goal is to develop a modern technical device for sewage sludge disposal through combustion, which will comply with increasingly stringent waste management and disposal regulations in the future. From our perspective, it is also important that the newly developed device appeals to small, medium, and large producers of sewage sludge on the broadest possible scale, considering the varying sizes of wastewater treatment plants in towns, municipalities, and large agglomerations. The device should be designed to be offered in various configurations, including duplicated lines or multiples of technological lines.

Project Management

The project is carried out through effective cooperation between the company EKOMVO s.r.o. and VŠB-TUO (team members from the ENET Centre and the Institute of Environmental Technologies). The implementation team is balanced between two entities—a medium-sized company and a research organization—that complement each other and create a synergistic whole:

1. EKOMVO s.r.o. – project leader; defines the problem, analyzes user and system requirements, develops the study and design, assembles the prototype, performs testing and optimization, and ensures market utilization of the main project result.

2. VŠB-TUO – responsible for research and transferring new knowledge into the prototype design; conducts analyses and testing of input and output materials, collaborates on design of individual components, manages the combustion chamber control, prepares and performs sampling and analyses, tests and optimizes the technology, establishes mass balances, and prepares final reports.
